Earth Day: A Global Movement for Environmental Protection

Celebrating the Planet and Raising Awareness

About Earth Day

Earth Day is a global event that aims to highlight the importance of protecting our planet. Celebrated annually on 22 April, it was first established in 1970 by EARTHDAYORG. This day serves as a celebration of our planet and an opportunity to address critical environmental issues, particularly climate change.

Around the world, people from all walks of life participate in Earth Day activities to raise awareness and advocate for environmental stewardship. These activities may include clean-up efforts, tree planting, educational campaigns, and policy discussions.

History and Legacy

Earth Day was first conceptualized by Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin in 1970. Inspired by the anti-war protests of the time, Nelson proposed an environmental movement dedicated to raising public awareness about the deteriorating state of the planet.

The first Earth Day on April 22, 1970, mobilized an estimated 20 million Americans to participate in demonstrations, teach-ins, and other events across the country. The event's impact on environmental policy was significant, leading to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the passage of the Clean Air Act, among other regulations.

Since its inception, EARTHDAYORG has continued to organize Earth Day events and campaigns globally. Over the years, the movement has expanded beyond the United States, with billions of people worldwide now participating each year.
