Calafiori Own Goal Gives Spain Victory

Spain Seal Last 16 Spot in Euro 2024

Calafiori Own Goal Gives Spain Victory

Spain booked their place in the last 16 of Euro 2024 as Group B winners thanks to a 1-0 victory over Italy. The decisive moment came in the first half when Riccardo Calafiori inadvertently put the ball into his own net.

The victory means Spain finish top of the group with seven points, while Italy, with six points, also advance to the knockout stages. Slovakia and Albania both crashed out of the tournament after losing their final group matches.

Spain will now face the runners-up from Group A in the last 16, while Italy will meet the winners of Group D.

Match Statistics

Spain dominated possession with 68% of the ball and had more shots on goal, although Italy created the clearer chances. Federico Chiesa struck the woodwork for Italy in the first half, while Spain had a penalty appeal turned down in the second.

In the end, it was Calafiori's unfortunate own goal that proved decisive. The defender tried to clear a cross from Dani Olmo but instead diverted it past his own goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Spain held on to their lead comfortably and could have added to their tally late on, but Álvaro Morata missed a great chance from close range.

Italy Disappointed to Exit

Italy coach Roberto Mancini was disappointed to see his side crash out of the tournament in the group stage but praised his players for their efforts.

"We played well today and created chances, but we were unlucky not to score," Mancini said. "Spain are a great team and they deserved to win, but I am proud of my players for their performance."

Italy will now have to wait until the 2026 World Cup to try and challenge for a major trophy again.
