Early Life and Education
Maya Lakshmi Harris was born on January 30, 1967, in Oakland, California, to Donald J. Harris, a Jamaican-born economist, and Shyamala Gopalan Harris, an Indian-born cancer researcher.
She graduated from Stanford University with a Bachelor of Arts in political science in 1989 and from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1994.
Career
Harris began her career as a civil rights attorney, working for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.
In 2003, she joined the San Francisco District Attorney's Office as a prosecutor, where she specialized in domestic violence and child abuse cases.
From 2008 to 2016, Harris served as the Senior Policy Advisor for Hillary Clinton's presidential campaigns.
Currently, she is a Professor of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley.
Personal Life
Harris married Tony West, a former Deputy Attorney General of the United States, in 1998. They have one daughter, Meena, born in 2004.
Maya and her sister, Kamala, have been close throughout their lives and have often collaborated on policy initiatives.
